GALWAY INDEPENDENT WARNED AGAINST PROVOCATIVE ADVERTISING IMAGES
Date Published: 06-Mar-2012
The Galway Independent newspaper and the operators of the Ryanair website have been warned not to use provocative images in advertising campaigns.
The Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland upheld a complaint after receiving eleven complaints from consumers in Ireland, Belgium, Spain and the UK.
The advertisement entitled "Red Hot Fares & Crew" was part of a Ryanair campaign which featured a photo of Gillian, the March Ryanair calendar girl, dressed in underwear and a top hat.
Complainants considered the advertisement to be offensive, degrading, demeaning and sexist to women.
The advertisers were reminded not to use provocative images to sell unrelated products such as airline seats.
