GALWAY got the job done with ease last Sunday in the All-Ireland senior ladies football championship to ensure they’ll have a spot in next month’s quarter-finals.

Olivia Divilly and Tracey Leonard kicked five points each, while Siobhan Divilly struck the goal on 46 minutes to ensure a tough afternoon for the outclassed Midlanders.

And on a positive afternoon, Corofin’s Roisin Leonard also made her return and slotted over three points upon her introduction in the second half.

There was a blustery wind in Tuam that was with the hosts in the first half, but Westmeath created the opening opportunity as Kelly Boyce Jordan was put through.

The advantage didn’t accrue for the winger and even though Westmeath did tease out other oportunities, it was the only time Galway’s resolute defence was found wanting.

At the other end, Maghnus Breathnach and Fiona Wynne’s charges were expected to put down a big total against the team they defeated by 15 points in the league, and they got off the mark through Ailish Morrissey on two minutes.

Westmeath were throwing their lot at Galway in the early stages and were rewarded with two Sarah Dillon frees. The latter concession was careless following a kick out, but the Tribeswomen soon reached the level expected and started to finally trouble the umpires after some disappointing wides.
