Galway in contention for Ireland’s first healthcare training centre
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Ireland’s first simulated training centre for healthcare workers is likely to be located in the west or northwest hospital group area.
A decision on the location is to be made at a meeting of the hospital group’s board next month.
The group consists of seven hospitals which include UHG and Merlin Park Hospital in the city and Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe.
Plans for the facility were announced at a major healthcare conference which is taking place in the Aula Maxima at NUIG today.
The new centre will place an emphasis on simulated training with mocked up wards and theatres.
It will be advanced with the provision of full fellowship programmes in partnership with NUIG with building expected to commence in the second quarter of 2014.
Collette Cowan, Chief Director of Nursing and Midwifery at the West/North West Hospital Group says it will be a blueprint for other centres nationally.
Speaking at the healthcare conference today, West/Northwest Hospital Group Chairman Noel Daly says partnership and innovation are key priorities going forward.
