Galway has improved its ranking on a national league table examining the performance of coastal counties in protecting water quality in seafood production areas.
It’s ranked third in the table of 11 coastal county councils, with Mayo in second place and Clare in the lead.
Last year, Galway featured in fifth place with 0.77 weighted points – this has increased marginally to 0.79.
The table is published by the IFA’s Aquaculture section and examines 22 classified sites in Galway.
Spokesperson Richie Flynn says top quality waters are needed to produce the best seafood for home and export consumption.
He says Galway County Council has supplied a detailed response on waste water treatment sites.
