Galway housing charity wants scheme to protect tenants’ deposits
Galway Bay fm newsroom – An estimated 350 thousand euro in deposits is illegally withheld by some landlords in Galway and the West each year.
That’s according to the Galway branch of housing charity, Threshold, which carried out the research.
Threshold says the figures are based on the number of tenants approaching it each year for advice and support.
The research found that the average deposit paid by tenants is 630 euro and the main reason given by landlords for keeping the deposit is alleged damage caused to properties above normal wear and tear.
The charity wants the Government to follow through on a committment to introduce a Deposit Protection Scheme.
This would involve a security deposit being paid to an independent agency and returned at the end of tenancy, unless there is a justifiable reason for the landlord to keep it.
