GALWAY HOUSHOLDERS URGED TO PAY PROPERTY TAX

Galway County Council is urging all homeowners to pay the household charge ahead of the midnight deadline.

Around one third of Galway households had registered or paid by 5pm yesterday, which is roughly in line with the national figure.

It’s undersood the majority of transactions for the charge have been made online.

On the national front, officials say that as of 9 o clock this morning, 636-thousand-127 householders had registered to pay.

But the Socialist Party is accusing the Government of exaggerating the registration figures, in order to put a positive spin on the "mass boycott".

Spokesperson Joe Higgins is calling on those in power to listen to the people – and scrap the tax.
