Over 31 thousand outpatients must be treated by November if the Galway Roscommon Hospital Group is to meet its Special Delivery Unit targets.

The group has vowed to tackle the waiting list as part of a major project being embarked upon this year.

This will involve a total change in the way the outpatient service is managed from assigning appointments to delivery.

As part of a validation exercise, 2,600 patients asked to be removed from the list, and a further 6,000 were removed due to their failure to respond.

This has left over almost 38 thousand people on the outpatient list for the group with 31 thousand of these to be treated by November in order to meet targets set down by the Department of Health.
