The Galway Roscommon University Hospitals Group has expressed it’s sympathy to the family of a woman who died at University Hospital Galway last month, following a miscarriage.

Savita Halappanavar was 17 weeks pregnant when she presented at the hospital on October 21st – she was told she was miscarrying and died of septacemia a week later.

Her husband says she asked for a termination a number of times – but was refused because the foetal heartbeat was still present.

In a statement this morning, the Hospital Group says it will launch a review of Savita Halappanavar’s death.

Kitty Holland, co-author of the report in today’s Irish Times says this is one of a number of inquiries that will take place:

Meanwhile, a candle-lit vigil is to be held for Savita Halappanavar on Saturday evening.

The event is organised by Galway Pro-Choice.

It takes place at Browne’s Doorway on Eyre Square at 5pm.

Rachel Donnelly of the group says the gathering aims to show support from the Galway community.
