Galway golfers go for glory
FOUR golf club from County Galway will be seeking All-Ireland glory next week when they compete for some of the major pennants in the Cups and Shields finals.
This year the finals, which are the pinnacle of every golf club’s dream, take place at Thurles Golf Club which is a narrow tree-lined course in places with some demanding and undulating greens.
Last year Galway Golf Club won their third Senior Cup in 12 years and they are now bidding to secure back-to-back victories with a team made up of some rising stars and no shortage of experience.
Ronan Mullarney has the talent to win every honour in the amateur game while Joe Lyons has ‘been there, done that’ by capturing the West of Ireland Amateur Open back in 2007, but he is still hungry for even more success.
They face Portmarnock in the All-Ireland semi-final with a strong side and Liam Power, Luke O’Neill and Liam Nolan have all tasted success on the club’s path to the All-Irelands.
Athenry Golf Club too will be hoping for a dream week down in Tipperary, but they are travelling to contest the Barton Shield in the knowledge that they will be without one of their ace players.
Star performer David Kitt will not be playing in the foursomes event as he will be participating in the Youth Olympics in Argentina – an event which he has committed to for a considerable time.
However, team captain Michael Lane says that the other members of the side will no doubt rise to the challenge with Irish international Allan Hill being joined by Darren Leufer, Louis O’Hara, Peadar O’Byrne and Joe Bernie on the panel. In the Connacht final they defeated Portumna with Kitt and Hill knocking in six birdies in an impressive round.
