Galway Golf Club is voted as top tournament venue in Connacht

GALWAY Golf Club in Salthill has been awarded the title “Best Tournament Venue 2014 – Connacht” at the Annual Delegate Meeting of the Connacht Branch of the GUI which was held in the McWilliam Park Hotel on November 25.

The award was bestowed on the club members and staff in recognition of the manner in which the club and course were prepared and presented for the 2014 Connacht Mid-Amateur Championship, which was held there over two days on October 4 and 5 last.

And what made the occasion even more memorable was that local golfer, and Galway Golf Club member, Eddie McCormack, secured a two shot victory over the field.

Club Manager, Dave Kelly, and incoming Captain Donal O’Sullivan were on hand on the evening to receive the award and both expressed their delight at the recognition given to the the club.

Both men paid tribute to the hard working and dedicated members of the course staff who presented the players with a firm but fair test of golf over the two days of the competition.

Galway Golf Club is one of the oldest clubs in Ireland having been founded in 1895 and will also be the host club for the 2016 Irish Close Championship.

These championships have seen some high profile winners down the years including, Rory McIlroy (2005 & 2006), Graeme McDowell (2000), Peter Lawrie (1996), Padraig Harrington (1995), Darren Clarke (1990) and Paul McGinley (1989).

Galway Golf Club will be open for new member applications from January 2015.
