Galway gig for punks with swagger and sophistication
Groove Tube with Cian O’Connell
Derry three-piece Cherym are among the most nuanced and sophisticated punk acts performing in Northern Ireland. With influences as wide ranging as Pixies, PUP and Charly Bliss, their work has glided between garage and alternative pop sounds since their first release in 2018. It culminated in October of 2021 with Hey Tori – a four-track EP via Alcopop! Records that came close to encompassing the vitality and swagger of their live set.
Still, seeing Cherym onstage remains a hugely different prospect to listening to their recorded work, and it is the only means of understanding their reputation as one of the most energetic acts Derry has produced.
This Saturday, April 22, Cherym are set to headline A Modern Movement in Galway’s Loft Venue on Bridge Street. Joining them on the night are Gender Chores, Lunch Machine and In Athens.
Having initially been scheduled to play Galway in February of 2020, it is a coup to now attract Hannah Richardson (guitar and vocals), Nyree Porter (bass guitar) and Alannagh Doherty (drums).
They recently finished up the English leg of their April tour having played the prestigious South by Southwest festival in Texas in March.
“It went really, really well,” Alannagh says of the tour. “We played Manchester Punk Festival as the last of our dates and we did London and Bristol before that. It was unbelievable – the crowd reception was class. We actually also played two new songs and got a really good reception on them so we’re buzzing.”
