Gardai have launched a major crackdown on motoring offences across Galway.
The County Joint Policing Committee has been informed by Chief Superintendent Tom Curley that speeding is the primary focus of the initiative.
He told those in attendance that Gardai will be making greater use of unmarked patrol cars to catch those breaking speed limits across the county.
He also warned that motorists caught alerting others to speed traps through the flashing of lights will themselves face prosecution.
Despite a drop in drink-driving offences, Gardai say it’s still a major concern – and efforts are being made to re-evaluate strategy and increase visibility.
Chief Superintendent Curley told the JPC that drink-driving is rife at all hours of the day – and a particular problem exists with women having a few glasses of wine at lunchtime.
Mobile phone use is also to be targeted – with Chief Superintendent Curley saying that the issue is ‘chronic’ and getting worse everyday.
He says he hopes to appoint a dedicated traffic inspector in the coming weeks to oversee an effective campaign.
Chief Superintendent Tom Curley says that alerting other motorists to speed traps is a serious offence and those caught will face prosecution.
