A local group in opposition to plans for a fish farm off Inis Oirr is to bring its protest to the Taoiseach’s Mayo constituency office today (Sat April 27).

The group ‘Galway Bay Against Salmon Cages’ has organised a bus leaving Dyke Road in the city at 11 with a pick-up in Tuam on the way.

Bord Iascaigh Mhara has applied for a deep sea salmon farming licence at a site off the coast of Inis Oirr, which, it says, has the potential to create hundreds of jobs.

However the protest group claims the open cages are breeding grounds for disease.

The rally will take place outside Enda Kenny’s constituency office in Castlebar at 2 this afternoon.
