Galway firm’s tidal energy collaboration
A pioneering Connemara company has joined forces with NUIG and some of the world’s leading developers of underwater power systems on a major new initiative to harness tidal energy – and produce clean electricity.
ÉireComposites – the design, manufacturing and testing company, with over 60 employees based in Inverin – is collaborating with other global leaders to develop and market a state-of-the-art marine hydrokinetic turbine.
And when operational, this innovative power system will produce clean energy at a reduced cost, while increasing reliability and performance of electricity output.
Known as the CRIMSON project (Commercialisation of a Recyclable and Innovative Manufacturing Solution for an Optimised Novel), this is funded by the European Commission via Fast Track to Innovation programme.
And as the only Irish-led project to receive funding, ÉireComposites secured €3 million for this €3.9m project to lead the international consortium of four other organisations – ORPC, with operations in Ireland, Canada and US; NUIG; Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials in Germany, and Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche in Italy.
