VICTORY must have tasted oh so sweet for the Galway minor hurlers in Ennis on Friday night as they eventually opened up their 2020 championship campaign with a hard-fought victory over a powerful Limerick unit on a damp, greasy night at Cusack Park.

This group endured disappointment after disappointment over the last 15 months with the constant postponements of their season. Mentally, it must have been a hugely challenging time for both players and management, wondering if and when they’d get the chance to take to the field.

Speaking prior to the game, manager Brian Hanley said that their preparation was “as good as it could be,” and that certainly proved to be the case but even so, the fact that this was Galway’s first time to pull on that maroon jersey and face-off against another county is a quite staggering stat.

What’s even more staggering is the manner in which they conducted themselves on the field and the quality of the performance they gave. Talk around the county has been that this is as good a minor side as we’ve had in the last decade or more and for this journalists’ eye, that may well be the case and the simple fact is, they should only get better and better from here on.

Galway only have one more game to peak for, that being this weekend’s All-Ireland final with Kilkenny but this is a squad you’d hope to see drive on into the future and, hopefully, become household names.

They faced a quality Limerick side on Friday night. The opening quarter was error strewn from both sides, that coming about due to the greasy conditions underfoot and also by way of the fact that this was Limerick’s first game in months and Galway’s first full stop.
