Galway FC lose away to Wexford Youths

The last unbeaten away run in the League of Ireland has ended after Galway FC lost 2-1 on Friday night away to Wexford Youths.

Galway FC manager Tommy Dunne argued after the game that his was the better side, but those who take a harsh outlook on matters will suggest the visitors got exactly what they deserved from a game in which their failings in front of goal were all too evident once again in this SSE Airtricity League First Division clash.

Galway have plenty of strikers on the books, but they have failed to deliver in the third series of games to leave serious question marks about the side’s ability to secure a play-off position at the end of the season. Yes, they hit Shamrock Rovers reserves for five, and put four past Cobh, but take away those games against the bottom two and there is a real failure in front of goal.

They side have scored just twice in their other five games in the third series – against Waterford United and Wexford Youths – and a haul of eight points from those nine games is a clear indictment of that paucity in front of goal, something Dunne admitted after Friday’s game.

“For me, it’s the same old story week in week out – we get the first three chances, we don’t take them, they get one, they score, that’s the start of it, and then a soft goal for a set piece.

“They should be picking the ball out of their net, but then they go up and score. You probably have the better team as regards the play tonight, but that’s no use, you’ve got to put the ball into the net, and stop the ball going into your net.

“We had two brilliant chances in the first half, the keeper pulls off a great save from Jake, fair enough, but the rebound off Marc Ludden’s effort should be finished, and then in the second half we have a free-header, it’s an open goal, but . . .,” a clearly frustrated Dunne said after the game.
