Galway FC face Shelbourne in crunch League clash
Galway FC manager Tommy Dunne admits the EA Sports Cup defeat at the hands of Wexford Youths on Tuesday night was the “worst possible preparation” for their trip to Dublin tonight to take on league leaders Shelbourne in Tolka Park (8pm).
Dunne’s side were dominant in terms of possession, territory and chances created in their quarter-final clash in Ferrycarrig Park on Tuesday night, but the same old failings of turning chances into goals came back to haunt them, after they were knocked-out of the competition on penalties.
“It was very disappointing, we created so many bloody chances but just didn’t take them, and that left us open to a sucker-punch. They nicked a goal in extra-time – an awful goal to concede – but we equalised and jaysus, we played some lovely stuff, but it ended up going top penalties and that’s always a lottery,” Dunne told Tribune Sport yesterday.
“It would have been great to get to a semi-final, and maybe get a big draw at home. Who knows, maybe we would get assassinated by someone like Dundalk, but these are the games you want to be playing,” he said.
The focus now turns to a trip to Tolka Park tonight and a chance for revenge against a side that nicked all three points in Eamonn Deacy Park last month courtesy of Dylan Connolly’s goal three minutes into injury time at the end of the game.
