GALWAY FARMERS WELCOME RESOLUTION OF REPS PAYMENTS ISSUE

Thousands of Galway farmers are relieved as the crisis over REPS payments has been resolved.

REPS the Rural Environment Protection Scheme was introduced to control pollution in Ireland

It emerged a fortnight ago that the EU was to withhold REPS payments until the end of each year which
caused uproar among farmers who depend on the money to finance farm improvements.

Minister for Agriculture Mary Coughlan has now obtained the EU Commissioners agreement that the payments will arrive at the start of each year [as was the original situation].
