GALWAY FARMERS SUFFER FINANCIAL LOSSES FROM HEAVY RAINFALLS
Date Published: 20-Aug-2008
Farmers in Galway are suffering serious cash losses as a result of the wettest August on record.
Many grain farmers are at risk of loosing their whole crop, while a number of livestock farmers have suffered financially as a result of housing their cattle for the majority of August.
Dairy, Beef and Sheep farmers are also suffering as a result of reduced grass growth rate.
The IFA is now calling on the Government to implement a six point action plan to alleviate mounting losses facing farmers as a result of wide spread flooding.
The plans include an early payment of single farm payments to farmers, an immediate disadvantaged area payment to 100,000 farmers and an immediate issue of the REPS payment.
Speaking to Galway Bay FM News, Chairman of the Galway IFA, Barry Donnelly says that every farmer in Galway would benefit from the proposals.
