Galway farmers are getting less grants from the Department of Agriculture than they were in previous years.

The publication of county-specific figures by the department show that Galway agriculturalists are now getting 558 euro less per farmer than they were in 2008.

This totals a loss of some seven point two million euro for county farmers.

MEP Marian Harkin said something needs to be done to redress what she calls an unfair funding bias for some counties.

She said farmers in some counties in the south and east of the country are recieving double the amount of their Galway counterparts.

She said the government must engage specific measures to deal with the unique needs of Galway farmers.
