Galway entitled to think big after taking care of Rossies
PADRAIC Joyce’s Galway side were convincing winners of the counties’ 48th Connacht senior football title last Sunday, moving back alongside Mayo on that mark in the all-time rankings. Quite where this team will rank in the grand scheme of things remains to be seen, but they do certainly have a very real opportunity to reach a stage in the All-Ireland championship that last happened in 2001.
Shane Walsh referenced it in his post-match interview, the goal of climbing the steps of the Hogan Stand on July 24. Why shouldn’t Galway dare to dream having just beaten this year’s Division 2 champions comprehensively while kicking a remarkable 18 scores from play? Perhaps the fact that no beaten Connacht finalist had ever registered 2-16 before will add a note of caution.
There was undoubtedly plenty of reasons to be enthusiastic about Galway’s performance last Sunday. While Roscommon’s forward division was touted as being a more complete and robust scoring unit, it was Galway’s front three who did all the damage on the day, as Man of the Match Walsh (1-6), Rob Finnerty (0-5), and Damien Comer (0-3) contributed handsomely.
