Galway enjoys a baby boom, despite recession

Whether it was the recession, the bad weather, or that people were friskier or more fertile . . . but Galway City officially experienced a ‘baby boom’ last year!

However, their ‘country cousins’ hadn’t as much time for the bedroom or rolling round in the hay, as the official figures show there was a year-on-year reduction in the numbers of babies born in County Galway in 2012.

A total of 1,203 babies were born in Galway City last year, according to the figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

That is over 100 more babies than the previous year and it is the highest number of babies born in the city since the CSO started recording these figures with a city and county breakdown way back in 1985.

During the nineties and early 2000s, the numbers of babies born in Galway City each year ranged between 600 and 900. But since 2007 the numbers of births has been consistently above the 1,000 mark and has increased every year during the recession to a peak of 1,203 babies.
