The Fine Gael party has been dealt another blow this week, with news today [26/11] that Deputy Ulick Burke is to retire.

The 67-year-old, Loughrea native made the announcement today after speaking to party leader, Enda Kenny.

Ulick Burke was first nominated to the Seanad in 1982 and was elected to the Dáil in 1997 until 2002.

He lost his seat in the 2002 election but was subsequently elected to the Seanad.

He was re-elected to the Dáil in 2007.

Ulick Burke’s announcement not to run in the next general election in East Galway, follows a similiar announcement by party colleague, Paul Connaughton, just days ago.

The competition for seats in the East Galway constituency now remains wide open with the retirement of the two Fine Gael stalwarts.
