Ciaran Cannon arrived to the count centre in New Inn in jubilant form in the knowledge that he has a seat in Galway East for the taking.
Flanked by his mother and his aunt, he posed for photographs and accepted the congratulations from his many supporters.
According to the tallies, he will poll close on 7,000 first preferences and take one of the guaranteed two Fine Gael seats.
He even expressed suprise to his followers over the extent of his first preference vote which was around 1,500 more than was originally predicted.
And it was a phenominal vote in view of the fact that Labour’s Lorraine Higgins was running in Athenry which is only a few miles from Cannon’s home base and she managed more than 3,500 first preferences.
