Galway East 4th Count: Madden eliminated

The fourth count in Galway East has been completed following the elimination of Peter Reid (Soc Dem) and Marian Spelman (Lab) in the third and, as expected, Sinn Féin’s Louis O’Hara was the main beneficiary and remains in contention for a seat.

Significantly, O’Hara’s lead on third placed Ciaran Cannon (FG) has widened to more than 1,100 as there are some predictions that Fianna Fáil could be casualties in this race.

It would be unthinkable to suggest that Fianna Fáil would not have representation in a constituency where they regularly delivered two seats in the past.

It was traditionally a Fianna Fáil stronghold, but there is every possibility they could leave the count centre without a seat.

At the moment, the votes cast for the Green Party’s Eoin Madden are being distributed and this should also be to Louis O’Hara’s benefit and it will be interesting to see what sort of cushion he will have before the expected elimination of Fianna Fáil’s Donagh Killilea.

In order for outgoing TD Anne Rabbitte to retain her seat, she would require a substantial transfer from Killilea. Killilea’s elimination will determine the outcome of Galway East.
