Galway ease past Limerick’s semi-final challenge

A highly impressive performance by the Galway senior camogie team in their league semi-final clash with Limerick saw the tribeswomen qualify for the league final for the first time in three years with a 16-point win in Birr on Sunday.

Although Limerick were impressive in their own campaign coming in to the game, they were simply no match for the Galway ladies on the day and Cathal Murray’s team took full advantage of their superiority to run out comfortable winners.

All the attributes of skill, physicality, work rate and clinical scoring were on show from the tribeswomen from the throw in to the final whistle. On this form going, they will be very hard for any team to beat.

Galway hit three scores in the first three minutes to lay down a marker. Carrie Dolan opened the scoring with a pointed free, before the Tribeswomen struck for a second minute goal.

Aoife Donohue showed superb pace to break through the defence before passing to Niamh Hanniffy, whose low shot beat Limerick keeper Laura O’Neill. Niamh Kilkenny then took a good point after a pass from Anne Marie Starr to extend the lead.

Limerick responded with their only score of the first-half, a converted 45 from Niamh Mulcahy. Galway established a dominant platform in the middle third in the opening half, where Donohue and Starr were both excellent, winning hard ball and linking the play effectively. Ailish O’Reilly took an impressive individual score in the 14th minute to make it 1-4 to 0-0.
