Galway don’t have much time to iron out some kinks in play

IN days gone by, intercounty managers wouldn’t have been too bothered if they still had a few kinks to iron out at the end of a league campaign. With often a couple of months to wait before the championship started, it was helpful even to have something to focus on and work toward as the evenings got longer.

Galway’s Division 2 campaign is now over and while Pádraic Joyce and his players certainly have some issues to resolve, unlike in years past they don’t have very long to sort them out. The Connacht quarter-final against Mayo is less than three weeks away and there looks to be a significant amount to put right before then.

Sunday’s loss to Roscommon was far from the end of the world and there were positives to take from the performance. The result and some of the causes of the defeat, however, mean that Galway’s loss to the same opposition the week previous can no longer be considered just a blip.

Certainly one thing that will be of worry to Joyce and his management team is the porous nature of Galway’s defence.

After the first six rounds of the league, Galway were topscorers in the country while averaging just under 13 points conceded per match, the ninth best defensive record throughout the leagues at that point. Those performances led to six wins from six and an instant return to Division 1.

There has been a severe decline in the last two games, however, with Galway having conceded 1-20 and 1-21 respectively.
