A County Galway doctor was one of those who contributed to new research, which shows that controlling blood pressure and cholesterol are just as important as controlling sugar levels for people with Type-2 diabetes.

More than 400 people from Ireland took part in a five-year global trial involving 11-thousand people in 20 countries.

The findings prove that treating diabetics with a blood pressure drug, that has been on the market for years, can greatly improve survival rates.

Dr. John Barton from Ballinasloe, who works as a consultant at Portiuncula Hospital was one of the Irish doctors involved in the trial.
