Galway & District League’s Team of the Millennium is revealed

Last week the Connacht and City Tribune published a selection of 44 players who were chosen by the clubs in the Galway & District league as amongst the best players who had played in the local junior game over the past two decades.

A selection committee has now selected its starting XI from that shortlist as the Galway League’s Team of the Millennium, picking the 11 players in a 4-4-2 formation.

All the players were nominated by the clubs throughout the league and the side chosen will be awarded with caps by the FAI to honour their selection in an event sponsored by the Galway Truck and Van Centre on the Headford Road.

While picking the original shortlist of 44 players was difficult enough, but selecting the actual 11 players to make the team was even more challenging.

Some played with powerhouse sides that challenged annually for titles, while others plied their skills and qualities with some of the less successful teams, but still stood out for their ability and class.

As highlighted last week, Athenry and Mervue United won the majority of domestic and provincial honours in the last two decades and their achievements are acknowledged by a fair selection of selection of players from the respective sides – for some, they shared the joys by moving between the two clubs and winning honours with both.
