GALWAY DEMONSTRATION OVER SEPTIC TANK CHARGES

Galway County Councillors will face protestors tomorrow ahead of their debate on the controversial septic tank charges.

The protest is taking place outside county buildings from one o’ clock and is being held to coincide with December’s council meeting.

Twelve public meetings have already been held in the Connemara region on the issue, as well as several more across the city and county.

Under the new rules being proposed by the Government, owners of homes with septic tanks will have to pay a charge when registering their tank with the authorities.

It’s being argued that this is a tax on rural dwellers, as the maintenance of sewerage schemes comes out of general taxes.

The Connemara region will also be heavily targeted in the inspection system because of landscape rules such as Special Areas of Conservation (SACs)
