GALWAY CYCLING CAMPAIGN CALLS FOR 30KM CITY CENTRE LIMIT
Date Published: 07-Aug-2007
The Galway Cycling campaign is calling for a reduced speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour in the city centre.
The cyclists are welcoming last week’s decision of Dublin City Council to reduce the city centre speed limit to 30 kilometres per hour.
The radically reduced speed limit in Dublin is understood to be part of a new initiative to prevent the deaths of cyclists and pedestrians.
Galway and other cities could be likely to follow their lead – a move which would not be welcomed by transport workers and taxi drivers.
A city council spokesperson confirmed that the move will be considered in 2008 but said there were no specific proposals before City management to reduce the speed limit in Galway city centre from it’s current limit of 50 kilometres an hour.
