A Consultant in Geriatrics at University Hospital Galway says the goal of care should always be a critical factor in medicating patients.

A new report says doctors are treating end of life dementia patients – without specific guidelines on the type of care they need.

The research was carried out on behalf of CARDI – the Centre for Ageing Research and Development in Ireland.

It found that some GPs and hospital physicians continue with dementia medications – even if they are of little benefit.

Consultant in Geriatrics at UHG, Dr Shaun O’Keeffe, says this can be problematic.
