Galway clubs out of luck in latest round of league ties
NUIG Mystics have to wait until this weekend to clinch the Women’s Division One South Conference title after suffering a 10-point defeat away to Portlaoise Panthers on a weekend in which all four Galway sides lost across the national leagues.
Their defeat, coupled with a pair of weekend wins for Limerick Sport Huskies, leaves the sides tied at the top of the South Conference table heading into this weekend’s final round of games.
The head-to-head record between the sides is identical, with both enjoying a five-point home win over the other in their two league meetings, so the conference title – and home seeding for the league semi-finals – will go down to scoring difference, with Mystics well ahead on that front with +238 as opposed to +151 for Huskies.
Mystics are away to Tipperary Knights on Saturday, and Huskies host city rivals Limerick Celtics. If Mystics match the Huskies result, they will clinch the conference title and also home advantage for the league semi-finals the following weekend.
MEN’S SUPER LEAGUE
Ballincollig 88
Moycullen 53
Moycullen will undoubtedly be looking forward to the comforts of a run of three home games to finish their season following a brutal road trip to Cork that ended in a comprehensive defeat at the hands of hosts Ballincollig at the weekend.
The league leaders, who have lost only once in the league all season, jumped straight out on top of Moycullen with Irish international point guard Adrian O’Sullivan leading the charge for the hosts as they took a 24-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Moycullen steadied the ship somewhat in the second period and long range three pointers scored by Grant Olsson, Dylan Cunningham and recent Sigerson Cup winning star Eoghan Kelly saw their offence flow a little better, but Ballincollig had impressive scorers of their as their import duo of American Andre Nation and Slovenian Milorad Sedlarevic began to stamp their authority with a series of fine scores that extended the Ballincollig lead to 45-28 at half time.
