Galway City’s 5,000 speeding fines in nine months

From this week’s Galway City Tribune – More than 5,000 speeding fines were issued in Galway City in the first nine months of the year, according to Gardaí.

A Garda report on local crime statistics up to the end of September, reveals a 141% increase in the Fixed Charge Penalty Notices being issued for speeding.

In total, some 5,028 fines were issued for speeding, an increase of 2,943 compared with the first nine months of 2019.

This led to criticism by some members at a Galway City Joint Policing Committee (JPC) meeting last week.

Fine Gael councillor and JPC member Eddie Hoare requested a detailed breakdown of the exact locations of the offences.

He said that driving 55km/h in a 50km/h zone “outside the hospital”, for example, “was not that dangerous”, whereas vehicles could go a lot faster on the Moycullen Road, which was more dangerous.

Chief Superintendent Tom Curley said it was an offence to drive over the speed limit, and motorists should stick to the limits. Gardaí did not have information about the locations of GoSafe vans, and the JPC would have to write to the Road Safety Authority to get this information, he said.
