Galway Bay fm newsroom – Contracts awarded by Galway City Council for capital projects exceeded their original contract price by almost 3.3 million euro.

Mayor of Galway, Padraig Conneely has expressed concern about the tender process adopted by the Council resulting in contracts exceeding the initial price by as much as 69 percent.

11 contracts, including the Séamus Quirke and Bishop O’ Donnell road project and the Galway Main Drainage Scheme, exceeded the original contract price by amounts ranging from 6 thousand euro to 1.7 million euro.

The Council has listed unforeseen changes with underground services and variations to the contract as reasons for the excess in price.

Legislation allows contract amounts to exceed their original tender value up to 50 percent of the amount of the original contract.

Meanwhile, Galway accounted for 5 percent of all public sector contracts published nationally last year, behind Dublin and Cork.
