Galway city has lost its litter free status according to the Irish Business Against Litter League.

The city has dropped to 34th place as ‘moderately littered’ from ‘litter free’ in 8th place last year.

An Taisce, which carried out the survey, said many moderately littered sites in Galway such as Eglinton Street, Court House Square, the Car Park at Cathedral and the Prom could easily be improved with a little extra effort and attention.

Seriously littered sites such as the Millennium Children’s Park and Ballybane Rd. Shopping Centre were described as generally poorly maintained.

There was one litter blackspot named in the city – the Canal Bank Walk and Park due to a myriad of objects discarded there such as shopping trolleys, bicycles and traffic cones.
