Galway City flood prevention measures will not be in place until 2028
From this week’s Galway City Tribune – It will be at least eight years before long-awaited flood defences are completed in the Spanish Arch and Docks areas – with the City Council estimating that it will be towards the end of 2028 before works conclude.
It was revealed this week that consultants have been appointed to the scheme by the City Council and the Office of Public Works, commencing what will be a five-stage process – funding for the works has been put in place as part of the Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) programme of works.
As part of stage one, an environmental impact assessment and cost benefit analysis are to be drawn up, as well as the identification of a preferred scheme.
Stage two and stage three involve seeking planning permission and progressing a detailed design, before going to tender for the works.
In its Chief Executive’s report, the local authority does not anticipate that it will commence construction until quarter one of 2025 – a stage they estimate will take three years to complete.
