The homeless housing units in the Westside

From this week’s Galway City Tribune – Some of the new modular homes in Westside – built at a cost of €2 million – are leaking.

Galway City Council has confirmed “water ingress” in the windows of a number of the 15 units in the Modular Family Hub that is being managed by the Peter McVerry Trust.

They were completed in April and are being used for emergency homeless accommodation. The first families moved in at the beginning of May.

City Councillor Colette Connolly (Ind) highlighted defects to the temporary homes at Bóthar le Chéile during a Council meeting in Leisureland on Wednesday.

The Deputy Mayor said it was her understanding that there were roof leaks in some of the buildings, and water was also coming in through the floors.

Senior Engineer with the City Council, Tom Prendergast, the Acting Director of Services for Housing, confirmed there was an issue with “water ingress”.

He said this was an issue for the supplier of the homes to rectify, and there would no additional cost or liability to the City Council as a result of the “defect”.

Mr Prendergast assured Cllr Connolly that it was his understanding that the leaks were to the windows, and not through the floors or roofs. He said that the leaks will be fixed by the supplier within the next week.
