Galway City Council’s €12m spend on roads for next year

Galway City Council has budgeted for a €12m spend on roads and transportation during 2018 – which accounts for 15% of the €78m allocated, and is a slight drop on the figure for 2017.

At this week’s meeting of the Council, Acting Head of Finance, Nepta Moggan outlined for members that the figure quoted made provision for an access road at Parkmore West, to be completed in January 2018, along with ongoing safety works at the Taylor’s Hill/Maunsells Road junction, and in Knocknacarra. She said that it also includes the further development of the Galway City Transportation Plan.

The 2018 figure assigned to roads and transportation in the draft budget is €12,035,084 – down €257,925 on last year.

“The overarching objection of the Transportation Department is to improve the mobility of the public across the city and, in doing so, develop a sustainable transport model that will service both present and future generations,” the document stated.

The main projects highlighted were: the Galway Transport Strategy, the Galway City Ring Road (GCRR), Kirwan Roundabout, Tuam Road Bus Corridor, Dublin Road-Doughiska Bus Corridor, City Centre Transport Management Plan, Public Bike Scheme, and Parkmore Junction.

In relation to the latter, Chief Executive, Brendan McGrath, said that the real solution will be the GCRR. “It must be appreciated that this junction will continue to experience high volumes of traffic, in advance of the long-term provision of the Galway City Ring Road.”
