From this week’s Galway City Tribune – An architect-led design team will be appointed to draw up plans to create a new cultural hub by consolidating two buildings at Nuns Island.

The Galway City Council project, which will be named CreativeSpace, will result in the consolidation of Nuns Island Theatre and the Church House at the rear of the theatre.

“This project includes a number of construction elements all of which will significantly enhance the site and the cultural offering in this historic part of the city which, when taken into consideration with other developments in the area, will effectively create a new, recognisable, legible cultural district in the city,” the Council said.

The site at 23 Nuns Island consists of the 18th century Presbyterian Church, fully refurbished by the Council in 2004, to become a fully equipped 82-seat theatre now called Nuns Island Theatre, and the 19th century Church House which adjoins the rear of the theatre.

The Church House is a derelict two storey residential house.
