Galway’s train station, the Promenade, Salthill Park and Knocknacarra Retail park have all been given special recognition in the latest survey from the anti litter league IBAL.

The study shows that over 80 per cent of Ireland’s towns are now as clean as the European average.

22 towns and cities, including Galway, out of 42 surveyed by An Taisce are deemed ‘Cleaner than European Norms’ , with a further 13 classed as ‘Clean to European Norm’ .

Only 7 are below the average.

Galwegians Rugby Football Club was cited as by far the most heavily littered site surveyed in Galway City and received a grade C.

Almost all of GMIT was described as being in immaculate condition, however the bus stop entrance brought down its overall grade to B.

Ireland’s cleanest town will be announced at a ceremony in Dublin later today.
