Two out of every five dogs put down in Galway city in 2008 were greyhounds – a figure which is prompting concerns over animal welfare.

Galway City was named among the top five local authority areas for having higher numbers of greyhounds being destroyed.

Figures in this morning’s Irish Times show that of the 191 dogs put down in Galway City in 2008, 74 were greyhounds.

Tipperary, Clare and Louth were also singled out as having higher-than-average figures.

The Minister for the Environment, John Gormley, believes the statistics prove a ‘significant animal welfare issue’ exists and plans to tackle the problem with new legislation on Dog Breeding.
