A young man who was rescued from the canal near Newtownsmyth last week is understood to have made a full recovery.

The emergency services were contacted shortly before 1pm on Wednesday afternoon after a person in difficulty in the water was spotted by passersby.

Shortly after, two to three units of Galway Fire Brigade were at the scene, and took the man from the canal.

He was subsequently taken to University Hospital Galway as a precautionary measure but it is understood that he hadn’t suffered any injuries.

It is thought that the man may have accidentally fallen into the Friar’s River Canal a short time before he was spotted in the water.
