Galway can keep good run going against visitors Offaly

THE Galway senior football team plan to keep intact their unbeaten record in all competitions so far this season when they welcome Offaly to Pearse Stadium on Sunday (2pm) for round three of Division Two of the National Football League.

Two wins from two in January’s FBD League, and two wins from two so far in the National League, Pádraic Joyce’s charges are flying it. Early days, it may be, but there’s plenty to please the maroon and white supporters from the comprehensive League wins over Meath and Down.

Judging by the standards set in those two outings, Offaly should be a routine task for the Tribesmen who have set their sights on immediate promotion back to Division One.

The Galway camp has kept its powder dry ahead of the game and other than providing an injury update (Seán Fitzgerald, Johnny Heaney and Seán Ó Maolchiaráin remain out) hasn’t engaged in media activity before their second home game of the season.

Favourites for promotion back to Division One at the start of the season, the Tribesmen have followed through on that tag to date by making light work of Meath and weathering an early second half storm to emerge with both points against Down in Esler Park.

Galway trounced Meath (1-14 to 0-6) in a lopsided affair the first day out but they were asked far tougher questions in the trip to Newry. They answered them admirably after surviving a third quarter onslaught from the Ulster outfit to earn a six-point win, 1-12 to 0-9.

Joyce will be hoping the Galway contingent on the NUIG side that faced UL in the Sigerson Cup final last night (Wednesday) at Pearse Stadium pulled through unscathed.
