IN a year in which the Galway camogie team swept the boards in spectacular fashion, it’s highly appropriate that one of the county’s greatest ever exponents of the game will be honoured with the Galway Sports Stars Hall of Fame award for 2019.

Sharon Glynn was the driving force in Galway’s first ever All-Ireland triumph in 1996, and her legendary camogie career also featured five club All-Ireland titles with the great Pearses team in 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001 and 2002. A gifted and powerful presence on the field, Sharon is breaking new ground as the first woman to receive the Hall of Fame accolade in the 55-year history of the awards.

Indeed, the annual Galway Sports Stars banquet in the Galway Bay Hotel on Saturday night, January 25, will be dominated by the sport of camogie with the county’s glorious run to All-Ireland and National League glory celebrated with three different awards – Niamh Kilkenny, Player of the Year; Cathal Murray, Manager of the Year; and Galway receiving the Team of the Year honour.

In hurling, Seán McDonagh becomes the youngest ever winner of the award after a stunning series of Man of the Match displays on Galway’s way to All-Ireland minor glory last August. The Mountbellew/Moylough teenager’s scoring exploits were exceptional for the grade.

It’s no surprise that Corofin’s ongoing and remarkable dominance of club football at county, provincial and All-Ireland level is reflected in two awards – the Club of the Year, and Liam Silke picking up the individual honour after a string of top class displays, highlighted by scoring critical goals in key matches.

In what was another progressive year for ladies football, Galway midfielder Louise Ward is rewarded for her exploits in the maroon jersey, together with helping her club, Kilkerrin-Clonberne, again complete the county and provincial senior double.

Ronan Mullarney picks up the golfing award again after a superb victory in the AIG Irish Amateur Close Championship in Ballybunion, while Monivea’s Caolin Blade’s string of impressive showings at the base of the Connacht scrum is recognised with the rugby award.
