GALWAY suffered as much misfortune as one would fear from Friday the 13th last weekend as their momentum from previous victories in the Connacht Minor Football championship was derailed and their vibrant attack malfunctioned against a much superior Mayo.

The team that averaged 26 points per game in victories over Roscommon and Sligo only managed one from play as the visitors suppressed the maroon and white’s firepower.

“You don’t mind losing games as long as you play close to your potential that you can play,” said Galway manager Alan Glynn afterwards. “The most disappointing thing is we didn’t get to the level we know we can.

“Fair dues to Mayo, they’re a very good team. They made things really difficult for us and stopped us from playing the game that we wanted to play.”

It means Mayo get the guaranteed provincial final spot and their berth in the All-Ireland quarter-finals. But Galway are still favourites to join them in three weeks time.

They’ll start this Friday (Carrick-on-Shannon, 7pm) against Leitrim in their final round-robin fixture. But with second place alreday secured, Glynn’s charges will face Leitrim, Sligo or Roscommon in the semi-final the following week.

This game started according to plan when Bearna’s Seán Dunne split the posts on 15 seconds. However, Mayo reorganised rapidly and looked to have done their homework.
