Galway Bay fm newsroom – A young gay man from the outskirts the city is urging the Irish Blood Transfusion Service to remove details of when a person is wrongly restricted from giving blood.

21 year old law student, Tomás Heneghan from Castlegar, has donated blood since he was 18, going about 3 times a year.

However he was recently asked to attend a meeting regarding his sexual life and was restricted from donating during the investigation.

It followed a query from an anonymous person.

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service has a lifetime ban from donating blood on any man who has ever had sex with another man.

Tomás says he has never been sexually active and this was eventually understood by the IBTS, however they will not remove details of the restriction from his personal file with the blood banks.

Speaking to Galway Bay fm News, Tomás Heneghan says it’s putting him off donating again.

And you can hear the full length interview with Tomás Heneghan on FYI Galway from 5 this evening.
