GALWAY ARTS GRANTS ALLOCATED AFTER LENGTHY DEBATE

The Galway Jazz festival is to lose 5000 euro in funding bringing their total allowance down 70% since 2005.

The Arts Grant proposal for this year was presented at a meeting of Galway City Council last night which proposed funding of 3000 euro for Galway Jazz Festival, down from 15,000 euro in 2005.

After several city councilors expressed their concern, the recommendations were revisited and it was confirmed that the Galway Jazz Festival will receive a total of almost 7 thousand euro.

The total allowance for Galway City is €401,000 which includes €47,000 for Galway Arts Festival.

Macnas receiving the highest funding at €32,000 for with KARA Writers Workshop getting just €500.

Many councilors expressed concern that the arts grants document was received too late and asked for the report to be deferred until the September meeting.

However following a lengthy debate, it was passed by the council members.
