Galway artist lets honesty and emotion shine through
Groove Tube with Cian O’Connell
Though he explores different styles and genres in his music, there is a core principle that runs through the work of 25-year-old singer-songwriter Kevin Neary. Be it a pulsing, indie-rock single or a slowed down, acoustic ballad, Kevin’s songs are invariably centred around emotion.
The Mountbellew native freely admits to being a spontaneous songwriter in that sense – he is at his most productive in the spur of the moment and, given the mundanity of life in lockdown, he has struggled at times to find inspiration.
That said, his latest project should provide the momentum for a fruitful 2021.
At the end of last month, Kevin released Hopelessly True, a sophomore single that arrives a year on from his debut track. The track is raw and melodic – it tells the story of a cathartic, late night experience playing music along the banks of the Liffey. An accompanying animated video, set for release this Friday, adds further context and depth to the story.
“In December of 2019, I went to Black Mountain Studios in Dundalk with four songs in my mind,” Kevin recalls.
“One of those was Take Me Anywhere, another was Hopelessly True and I’ve got two more singles to come after that. One is called Man of Fate which would be my big tune and hopefully my next single to move on from the current success of Hopelessly True. The guts of them were recorded in 2019 but I had loads of bits and bobs.
