GALWAY fell to a disappointing opening round defeat in the TG4 All Ireland Senior Ladies Football Championship. The loss means Galway must beat Westmeath to secure a quarter final berth while it effectively ends their chances of topping the group.

Maghnus Breathnach and Fiona Wynne’s side saw an Ailish Morrissey goal ruled out for a square ball in the 54th minute. The decision proved important with Galway only losing by two points although a pair of late goals did add some gloss to the final scoreline.

Breathnach was aggrieved with the decision in the aftermath of the game but there was no denying that Kerry were the better side as a Galway win would have been an extremely harsh outcome given the Munster side’s dominance.

Galway struggled to deal with the Kerry press throughout this encounter. It was noticeable from Galway’s first kickout that their opponents were extremely aggressive and brave in how they attacked this game. The Kingdom were desperate to end a four game losing streak to Galway and secure their first Ccampionship win over Saturday’s opponents since 2012

From the Galway kickout, Kerry kept all 15 of their players outside their own ’45 metre line as they were very aggressive in how they pressed the restarts. With Galway keeping two forwards stationed inside at all times, this meant that Kerry had a numerical advantage every time the kick-out went long. Even when Galway were able to go short, they faced a wall of green and gold in front of them.
